The 'Rotating Machine Expert (RMxprt)' is a simple, easy to use, template driven (Fig 2) software catering to fifteen (Fig 1) different types of rotating machines and includes both current and Permanent Magnet excited machines. Within each type, sub and sub-sub categories with a variety of options exist. RMxprt also creates the power drive circuit automatically.

Sizing decisions: RMxprt is the designer’s first choice. It can be gainfully employed for making sizing decisions involving machine main dimensions and critical choice concerning the ampere-conductor distributions around the air gap, winding options and examining its effect on device performance.

Libraries: Built-in libraries (Fig 3) for slot representation, conductor library, winding representation, material properties, drive circuit etc assist the user in expediting the modeling process. Solution times are extremely small and typically less than five seconds.

Output: The powerful analytical engine delivers machine characteristic curves, induction and loss particulars and electromagnetic parameters from the device’s Steady State, Transient and sub-Transient regimes of operation. The computed results are presented as graphical variations (Fig 4a, 4b), 3d-surface plots (Fig 5) and report format. The results presented also include electromagnetic parameters such as the end-region reactance’s that are not readily available from 2d solutions.

Optimetrics: The Parametric Analysis feature in RMxprt allows designers to play with geometric dimension, material properties answering several “What if . . . ?” situations the designer is confronted with.

The graphical representation of device efficiency, output power etc as a family of curves enables quick decision making. Besides Parametric Analysis, the Optimetrics feature in RMxprt enables Optimization, Sensitivity Analysis and Statistical Analysis.

Exporting model to Maxwell 2d/3d: And, finally, at the click of a button, the RMxprt model can be converted to a readily solvable 2d or 3d Maxwell Project (Fig 6). RMxprt is native to Maxwell GUI and the Maxwell project is readily accessible in Maxwell. A quick analysis in Maxwell allows a detailed inspection of the magnetic state of the machine, saturation and leakage fields and related electromagnetic parameter and performance estimation.
